The school supplies drive is to benefit poor high school students living in Manila, Philippines.  As most families live on about $2 a day, many of their children will not receive the proper education they need.  Therefore, I proposed the idea to SIFE, and am currently spearheading the project.

The idea came from the fact that 1 - I grew up in the Philippines and know what it’s like to live in that situation, and 2 - I will be going on a trip for a week, and did not want to miss this great opportunity to give something back to the Filipino community.

SIFE will just give away school supplies and be finished with the project when my vacation ends.  Besides the school supplies, I plan on teaching the students the very basic things about money - where and how to save, how to calculate interest, budgets, and the like.  It still doesn’t stop there - RIT, being the forefront university in the latest technology, turnover computers within two years.  Therefore, there are many computer systems on-campus slated for recycling or retirement, when they are still perfectly usable.  I hope to partner up RIT and the high school to create a computer lab for students to start learning the technology of today.

My trip will be from February 13th to the 19th (just in time for Valentines’ Day!).  I plan on visiting the school on February 18th.  More information will be coming soon. ~Megan S.
